The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) was introduced in 2004 to simplify access to necessary healthcare for European citizens traveling within the EU/EEA and Switzerland.
The easily recognisable and standard EHIC replaced various paper-based medical forms. Since its introduction in 2004, the number of EHIC cards has gradually and steadily increased.
The 20th anniversary of the EHIC is a great opportunity to reflect on its evolution and impact and to look towards a future marked by further accessibility and digitalisation. See more in this publication:
