During its 113th session on June 13th the International Labour Organization (ILO) adopted the first Convention supplemented by a Recommendation focused on the prevention of and protection against biological hazards in the working environment. This closes a longstanding gap in international labour standards.
The ILO also launched its standard-setting discussions on Decent Work in the Platform Economy which will end in 2026.
On day two, a majority of participants voted to pursue a binding Convention supplemented by a Recommendation — a notable step in addressing labour conditions in the growing platform economy.
Following lengthy discussions around the inclusion of “sexual orientation and gender identity” in official texts, the ILO adopted its Programme and Budget for 2026–2027, amounting to $880 million in assessed contributions.
Ultimately, the budget passed with zero nominal growth, significantly less than the 20% average reduction seen across the UN system.
