Social dialogue in the electricity sector covers activities related to NACE (Rev. 2) code 35.1, which include electricity production, transmission, distribution and trade.
The sectoral social dialogue committee has been created in 2000, replacing the informal working committee previously functioning since 1996 The electricity sector employs almost one million people in the EU27.
This figure corresponds to 0.55% of the total EU workforce in 2019. The overall trend at European level over the past 10 years is of a slight decrease in employment in the energy sectors, including electricity (Eurofound Representativeness study, 2022).
The sector faces the following main challenge:
- adapting to the energy transition and to the EU energy policies, notably the reform of the electricity market
- tackling peaks and volatility in energy prices
- reinforcing the electrification in Europe and the distribution grids
- attractiveness of the sector, notably for women and young people.
