Social dialogue in the insurance sector covers activities related to NACE (Rev.2) 65, which include: 

  • insurance (life & non-life)
  • reinsurance
  • pension funding, except compulsory social security

The sectoral social dialogue committee has been created in 1999, replacing the informal working committee previously functioning since 1987. 

The EU insurance sector employed about 1.25 million people in 2017 (EU Large Household Sample survey). 

Based on the Eurostat SBS data available for the sector, there were an estimated 5,000 insurance-related companies in the same year.

The sector faces the following main challenge:

  • improving the regulatory environment and addressing its impacts, including the Retail Investment Strategy package and the Solvency II programme
  • increased life expectancy and escalating health costs
  • digitalisation and AI in the workplace
  • green transitions and sustainability
