Woodworking - Sectoral social dialogue

Social dialogue in the woodworking industry covers activities related to NACE (Rev.2) codes 16, which include:

  • sawmilling,
  • manufacture of wood, cork, straw & plaiting products (except furniture).

The sectoral social dialogue committee has been created in 2000, replacing the informal working committee previously functioning since 1994. In 2019, the woodworking sector in the EU27 employed some 790,00° people, representing 0.7% of total employment. The same year, the industry’s production value was around €126 billion, generated by about 160,000 companies (Eurofound Representativeness study, 2023).

The sector faces the following main challenge:

  • labour shortages
  • climate change and the green transition
  • high factor costs, causing low profitability
