The event, titled ‘Greening the EU: apprenticeships in the renewable energy sector’, will explore the important role apprenticeships play in supporting the renewable energy sector’s transition towards a greener and more sustainable European economy.
The renewable energy sector is crucial for the EU's aim to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and meet its 2030 energy and climate goals. Nowadays, the demand for skilled workers in renewable technologies is rapidly increasing and high-quality apprenticeships can facilitate this transition.
The webinar will bring together experts, educational institutions, industry stakeholders, and representatives from the European Commission to discuss how fostering a skilled workforce through apprenticeships can help this evolving sector thrive.
Key topics will include:
- an overview of current trends in the EU’s renewable energy sector and the role of vocational education and training in addressing skills shortages
- future goals and bottlenecks to achieving the EU’s energy and climate targets, with insights from the Renewable Energy Skills Partnership
- strategies for strengthening partnerships among educational institutions, employers, and policymakers to improve apprenticeship quality
- approaches to attract a diverse talent pool into renewable energy apprenticeships, with a focus on gender balance and inclusiveness
- best practices and programmes that integrate upskilling and reskilling in wind power, solar energy and hydrogen technologies.
The webinar will be moderated by Anna Barbieri, Team Leader for Apprenticeships and Erasmus+ at the European Commission, and will feature the following panellists:
- Shima Souraki, Adviser for International Cooperation at Vestland Fylkeskommune, Norway
- Kasia Lyko, National Apprenticeship Programme Coordinator at Kerry Education and Training Board, Ireland
- Amber Riedl, Training Leader - Renewable Energy at OHKW Klimajobs
- Tuscany Bell, Policy Officer for the Energy Sector at European Federation of Public Service Unions
Additionally, Adam Tsakalidis, an expert in online job advertisements in the Skills intelligence and foresight team at CEDEFOP, will provide a thematic introduction.
By attending the webinar, participants will gain valuable insights into how apprenticeships can address skills gaps in the renewable energy sector and contribute to the EU’s broader sustainability goals.
