Hospitals and healthcare - Sectoral social dialogue

Social dialogue in the hospital and healthcare sectors covers activities related to NACE (Rev.2) code 86, which include: 

  • hospital activities,
  • medical and dental practice activities,
  • other human health activities.

The sectoral social dialogue committee has been created in 2006. In 2020, the hospital and healthcare sectors employed around 15,5 million workers (2020 Eurostat SBS). 

The sector faces the following main challenge:

  • structural labour shortages, recruitment and retaining workers
  • working conditions
  • digitalisation and its opportunities for the sector
  • occupation health and safety at work.

The current work programme focuses on:

  • occupational Safety and Health
  • recruitment and retention of the health workforce
  • continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Life-Long Learning (LLL)
  • European/ EU-level healthcare policy.
