Road transport accounts for a large share of GDP (gross domestic product) and employs over 3.4 m people EU-wide (Eurostat, 2014 Labour Force Survey data).
Challenges to the sector include:
- making transport safer & more secure
- improving working conditions in the sector & the transport environment as a whole
- creating a sustainable balance between market interests & social conditions
- attracting young recruits to the profession, at a time when numbers qualified staff are dwindling
- improving the EU competiveness of the sector in the EU in relation to competitors in non-EU countries
