Treatment, coverage & costs

If you require urgent/necessary medical care while staying temporarily in Malta, please present a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This card gives you access to state-provided healthcare at the public health centres listed below.

If you plan to stay in Malta for longer (for example as a posted worker or pensioner) your current competent institution should send a S1 to Malta competent institution, that will then issue a Certificate of Entitlement.

You should present your Malta Identity Card whenever you need to access public health care services.

Medical services

Dentists

  • Emergency dental treatment is provided free of charge at Mater Dei Hospital in Msida and the health centres.
  • Routine and non-urgent dental care is provided privately. You will need to pay for this yourself. These costs are non-refundable.

Hospital treatment

  • Acute emergency treatment is provided at
  • In the event of an acute emergency,
    • call 112 for an ambulance, or
    • go straight to the Accident & Emergency Department at Mater Dei Hospital or Gozo General Hospital.

Prescriptions

  • Any medication prescribed during in-patient treatment, and for the first 3 days after discharge from hospital, is free of charge.
  • You will be charged in full for anything prescribed after this period. These charges are non-refundable.

Ambulance

  • In the event of an emergency, transport by ambulance to the hospital is covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Loss of card

Contacts for holders of EHICs issued in Malta

  • In case you are unable to present your EHIC, you should contact your competent institution to provide you with a Provisional Replacement Certificate which you will be able to present to the Service Provider.
  • If you cannot present your EHIC at the hospital and you have to pay for the treatment provided, make sure that you have the receipt provided by the hospital and then contact your competent health institution once you return home so that your claim will be processed.
