Treatment, coverage & costs
If you require urgent/necessary medical care while staying temporarily in Malta, please present a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This card gives you access to state-provided healthcare at the public health centres listed below.
If you plan to stay in Malta for longer (for example as a posted worker or pensioner) your current competent institution should send a S1 to Malta competent institution, that will then issue a Certificate of Entitlement.
You should present your Malta Identity Card whenever you need to access public health care services.
Medical services
- Medical services are provided free of charge in public health hospitals and health care centres to all persons insured or covered by healthcare coverage on presentation of valid documentation.
- You must present a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a Provisional Replacement Certificate to make use of the services provided in these facilities.
- If you do not present one of these documents, you will need to pay for the services provided by public health care services in Malta.

Dentists
- Emergency dental treatment is provided free of charge at Mater Dei Hospital in Msida and the health centres.
- Routine and non-urgent dental care is provided privately. You will need to pay for this yourself. These costs are non-refundable.

Prescriptions
- Any medication prescribed during in-patient treatment, and for the first 3 days after discharge from hospital, is free of charge.
- You will be charged in full for anything prescribed after this period. These charges are non-refundable.
Ambulance
- In the event of an emergency, transport by ambulance to the hospital is covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

In Malta public health care is provided free of charge to all entitled persons, provided that they can present valid documentation.

Loss of card
Contacts for holders of EHICs issued in Malta
- In case you are unable to present your EHIC, you should contact your competent institution to provide you with a Provisional Replacement Certificate which you will be able to present to the Service Provider.
- If you cannot present your EHIC at the hospital and you have to pay for the treatment provided, make sure that you have the receipt provided by the hospital and then contact your competent health institution once you return home so that your claim will be processed.
