Treatment, coverage & costs

Doctors

  • To take advantage of your European Health Insurance Card, you should consult a doctor who works under the Slovak public health insurance system.
  • You may be charged a fee. This is non-refundable in Slovakia, but you can always seek reimbursement once you return home.

Dentists

  • To take advantage of your European Health Insurance Card, you should consult a dentist who works under the Slovak public health insurance system.
  • Emergency dental healthcare is usually free, but you may incur charges depending on what materials the dentist uses.
  • For all other dental healthcare, there will be a charge. This is non-refundable in Slovakia, but you can always seek reimbursement once you return home.

Hospital treatment

  • Emergency healthcare is available in the accident and emergency department of any hospital. A referral is not necessary.
  • Services and medicine are normally free of charge, but there may be substantial non-refundable charges for complex procedures. These are non-refundable in Slovakia, but you can always seek reimbursement once you return home.

Prescriptions

  • A standard fee is payable for each prescription.
  • You may have to pay part of the medicine's cost if it is not covered by the public health insurance scheme. This is non-refundable in Slovakia, but you can always seek reimbursement once you return home.
  • Pharmacies have a list of subsidised medicines.

Ambulance

  • Free of charge

Reimbursement

  • There is no reimbursement system in Slovakia.
  • If you have to pay for healthcare, contact your national health insurance provider once you return home to seek reimbursement.


 

Patient contribution

Accompanying person in the hospital

  • Pays €3.30 per day.
  • Can stay for free if the person is:
    • a nursing mother with a child / children
    • accompanying a child under three years of age,
    • accompanying a person under 18 years of age receiving treatment for cancer.

Medicine, medical devices and dietetic foods

  • You will be charged €0.17 for statistical processing of a prescription or voucher for medical device.
  • There is no fee of €0.17 if the insured person:
    • presents a copy of the prescription (when visiting more than one pharmacy),
    • presents the prescription for drugs or dietetic foods, which are fully paid by the insured person,
    • presents a perscription for vaccines which are compulsory,
    • has been awarded the gold Jansky medal (or higher award) or
    • presents an electronic medical record (e-card) containing the prescription.

Emergency department

Depending on the kind of emergency service and healthcare provided:

  • In case of outpatient emergency service or dental emergency service, the insured person is charged €2.00, except if the insured person is sent to inpatient emergency service immediately.
  • In case of fixed outpatient emergency service at home or in another natural environment of the insured person, the fee is €10.00.
  • In case of inpatient emergency service, the insured person is charged €2.00 if:
    • the visit takes place between 4 pm and 10 pm during working days and 7 am and 10 pm during weekends and holidays in a region where the outpatient emergency service is not provided, or
    • the insured person has been dispatched there immediately after outpatient emergency service has been provided.
  • In any other case of inpatient emergency service the insured person is charged €10.00.

All the above-mentioned kinds of emergency services are free of charge if the healthcare provided concerns:

  • outpatient or inpatient emergency service relating to an accident immediately after it has happened, except if it occurred due to abuse of alcohol, or any other addictive substance or medicine was used in a different way than the one recommended by the doctor,
  • inpatient emergency service and the healthcare provided lasts more than 2 hours,
  • outpatient or inpatient emergency service which results in the admission to inpatient healthcare (e.g. hospital),
  • outpatient or inpatient emergency service provided to a minor at a facility decided by the court or by child protection services, and the healthcare provided was requested by social services,
  • an insured person who has been awarded the gold Jansky medal (or higher award) .

Transportation

  • Transport by ambulance is charged at the rate of €0.10 per kilometre.
  • This charge does not apply if the insured person:
    • takes part in a chronic dialysis or transplant programme,
    • receives cancer or cardio-surgical treatment,
    • is severely disabled and is dependent on transport by private vehicles,
    • is transported from one hospital to another based on the requirement order of the inpatient healthcare provider,
    • has been awarded the gold Jansky medal (or higher award) .

Others

There is a fee of € 2.00 providing an extract from medical documentation for purposes related to the provision of health care.

If a patient requires an extract for the purpose that is not related to the provision of healthcare, a healthcare provider has a right to request a higher price. However, the price must be disclosed in the price list.


 

Dialysis, oxygen & chemotherapy

  • You are entitled to dialysis, oxygen therapy and chemotherapy in Slovakia upon presentation of your EHIC.
  • You must arrange for treatment with a healthcare provider under the Slovak public healthcare system before you arrive in Slovakia.
  • Medical certificates proving the necessity of this healthcare must also be submitted to the healthcare provider.
